Prepaid electricity meters in North Cyprus: card or Wi-Fi?

Prepaid meters end electricity debt in rented flats and shops: the difference between card and Wi-Fi models, which one suits you and how installation works.

For owners of rented flats, student houses and shops in North Cyprus, one of the most common problems is collecting electricity money: the bill arrives, it is split among tenants, part of it is never paid, or a tenant leaves with debt. A prepaid electricity meter ends this cycle because electricity is paid for before it is used.

How does a prepaid meter work?

Each flat or shop gets its own prepaid meter. Credit is loaded onto the meter and decreases with consumption. When the credit runs out the meter cuts the power by itself; after a top-up the power returns. Nobody owes anybody.

These meters split consumption between flats inside the building; the building's electricity subscription and main meter usually stay as they are. We check your panel and subscription together during the site visit.

Two options: card and Wi-Fi

Prepaid card meter

Credit is written to the tenant's card at the office with a card reader/writer; the tenant inserts the card into the meter. No internet needed and simple to install, but the card has to be brought to the office for each top-up.

Prepaid Wi-Fi meter

The meter connects to the building's Wi-Fi. Credit is loaded from the customer portal without visiting the meter and usually arrives within seconds. The owner sees every flat's remaining credit, daily use and alerts on the phone and can switch the power on or off remotely. If the internet goes down the meter keeps working, because the credit is stored in the meter.

Which one should I choose?

  • The building has internet and you have several flats: Wi-Fi meters. No need to visit the building to top up or follow consumption.
  • No internet, a few flats or a construction site: card meters. Simple and independent.
  • Tenants change often: both work; with Wi-Fi meters the remaining credit is reset from the portal with one click.

Installation and price

The meters are standard DIN-rail mounted and usually fit the existing panel. Akten Elektrik handles the site visit, installation, Wi-Fi setup and portal training from Famagusta. The price depends on the number of flats, the panel and the chosen system.
