What is a prepaid card water meter and how does it work?
With a card water meter, water is paid for before it is used. How the system works, what it consists of and what it solves in complexes, apartment blocks and rentals.
A card water meter — often called a prepaid or top-up water meter — works on a simple principle: load first, then use. The user loads credit onto a card and presents it to the meter; credit decreases as water is used, and when it runs out the meter shuts the water off by itself.
How it works
- Each flat or user receives a smart card.
- The management loads credit onto the card with a top-up device and software.
- The user holds the card to the meter; the credit transfers to the meter.
- The meter measures consumption, deducts credit and shows the balance.
- It warns when credit is low and closes its internal valve when credit runs out.
Who is it for?
- Residential complexes and apartment blocks: no more splitting a shared water bill or chasing unpaid debts.
- Rentals and student housing: landlords no longer track tenants' water debts.
- Businesses and shared spaces: everyone pays for what they use.
What to look for
Choose the right pipe size (homes typically use DN15 or DN20), make sure cards and software will still be supported years from now, and have the meter installed where the card can be read easily.
